Comparison of Nematode Communities in Agricultural Soils of North Carolina and Nebraska
نویسندگان
چکیده
Samples of agricultural soils were collected across North Carolina in 1992 and Nebraska in 1993 to determine which indices of nematode communities could be applied to distinguish ecological pattern at regional geographic scales. Sampling density was proportional to the area of agriculture in each region of each state. Maturity indices (based on life-history characteristics) were calculated to determine the successional status of nematode communities, and diversity indices were calculated to estimate relative abundance of nematode trophic groups. Population densities of nematode families were also compared between states and among regions within states. The range of maturity-index values for free-living and plant-parasitic nematodes was greater for soils in North Carolina than in Nebraska. The relative distribution of nematode trophic groups (bacterial feeders, fungal feeders, plant parasites, omnivores, and predators) was similar in the two states. Significant differences in maturity-index values for free-living and plant-parasitic nematodes were found between but not within states. We conclude that regional or national assessments of soil ecological condition based on measures of nematode community structure can be made at a geographic resolution of 125 000–200 000 km2 of land area.

Sampling for regional monitoring of nematode communities in agricultural soils.
Regional assessment of nematode communities to monitor the condition or ecological health of agricultural soils requires sampling programs with measures of known reliability and the ability to detect differences over time. Numbers of fields sampled in a region, samples taken per field, and subsamples assayed per sample must be balanced with cost to provide the best sampling scheme. We used comp...
متن کاملNematode communities in organically and conventionally managed agricultural soils.
Interpretation of nematode community indices requires a reference to a relatively undisturbed community. Maturity and trophic diversity index values were compared for five pairs of certified organically and conventionally managed soils in the Piedmont region of North Carolina. Available nitrogen (nitrate, ammonium) was estimated at various lag periods relative to times of sampling for nematode ...
متن کاملGranite rock outcrops: an extreme environment for soil nematodes?
We studied soil nematode communities from the surface of granite flatrock outcrops in the eastern Piedmont region of the United States. The thin soils that develop here experience high light intensity and extreme fluctuations in temperature and moisture and host unique plant communities. We collected soils from outcrop microsites in Virginia (VA) and North Carolina (NC) in various stages of suc...
متن کاملProfiling Nematode Communities in Unmanaged Flowerbed and Agricultural Field Soils in Japan by DNA Barcode Sequencing
Soil nematodes play crucial roles in the soil food web and are a suitable indicator for assessing soil environments and ecosystems. Previous nematode community analyses based on nematode morphology classification have been shown to be useful for assessing various soil environments. Here we have conducted DNA barcode analysis for soil nematode community analyses in Japanese soils. We isolated ne...
